1. Winter Wonderland

While other places in the United States have experienced colder than normal temperatures, we have had a fairly mild winter so far here in Utah. However, we do have snow on the mountaintops which makes for inspiring sunsets.

We are releasing version 1.2.2 to the App store next week! It contains some bug fixes and enhancements as outlined below. In particular, we have some fun new features for our Premium Subscribers related to photos and stories. Let’s look at specifics for these Product Updates.

Fixes

  • Fixed issue preventing users from sharing event cards on Twitter
  • Fixed issue that broke our location-based notifications
  • Fixed issue preventing user from seeing larger version of photos in the Memories tab
  • Fixed sorting issue in Family tab. Children now sort chronologically instead of alphabetically
  • Improved map layer icons and removed “bouncing” animation

New Features

  • Notification badge icons. Show how many unread notifications you have from the home screen.

Premium Features

  • Tap on premium map layer icon (like cemeteries and churches) to reveal the name.
  • Users can now zoom in on photos, documents, and stories
  • Users can now download Memories to the local device
  • Users can now share individual Memories via email, text, social media, etc.
  • Custom events like Residence, Occupation, Naturalization, and Military Service can now be seen in the Person Details page and in the Map View.

Most people aren’t traveling at this time of year. Instead use this time to compile your research and plan a trip for the Spring or Summer! The Family Nexus app can really help you learn about and connect with the places from your family history!

2. Tips & Tricks – Standardizing Places

Have you noticed some map pins in The Family Nexus that just don’t seem to make sense? Events that show up in a region of the world where you didn’t know you had roots can be exciting. Finding out later that it was just a data problem and you don’t have an ancestor who died in Indonesia can be disappointing.

The Family Nexus uses data about people, dates, and places directly from your tree in FamilySearch.org. When data is entered the system tries to match a place name to a “standardized” place in their authoritative database of modern and historical place names. Abbreviations, misspellings, and other errors can cause the data in the “Place” fields to be less valuable because they aren’t tied to a standardized place.

Read step-by-step instructions on how to do this in this article from The Family Nexus Blog. Cleaning up data and standardizing place names can be very helpful for your own research and for others using FamilySearch. An added bonus is that the event pin shows up in the right place in The Family Nexus mobile app.
